Our exchange records in District 9640 date back to 1982. From 1982 to 2020 in District 9640 we have exchanged more than 1,650 students on long term exchanges around the world, including more than 862 students on outbound exchanges, and hosting more than 762 students on inbound exchanges to Australia. Check out the map below to see where some of our outbound students have been to on exchange!
Outbound long term students have the opportunity to nominate their list of five preferred countries for their exchange. However, as there are limited places in any one country and our exchange agreements can change from year to year depending on what students want to come to Australia, a preparedness to accept an exchange in any of their five preferred countries, or potentially another destination altogether, is required of all Rotary Exchange Students.
The District committee decides the final country of destination.
Exchange Destinations – 2025 Long Term Program
The exchange destinations that will be available for students to nominate from include the following. Please note that this list is not guaranteed or final – some countries may not be available when exchanges are negotiated with our partners, and other countries may become available. Students are asked to nominate their top five preferences in their initial applications, and this is then discussed at the District Interview where students have the option to change their preferences.

Exchange Destinations – 2024 Short Term Program
Unlike the long term program, students applying for short term exchange apply for a specific country. Our short term program is significantly smaller than our long term program, and in 2024 the country options are limited to:
- Argentina (October – December 2024. Hosting your exchange partner January – March 2025)
- Germany (November 2024 – January 2025. Hosting your exchange partner from mid June – mid August 2024)
- Finland (as per Germany timeframe).
- Indonesia (As per Germany timeframe)
Due to the short time students spend in-country on a short term exchange, students who are able to demonstrate some language proficiency for their host country prior to their departure will be considered favorably.
Countries we have exchanged with in the past:
Argentina | France | Norway | Taiwan |
Austria | Germany | The Netherlands | Thailand |
Belgium | Hungary | Philippines | UK |
Brazil | Iceland | Russia | USA |
